Waltham Tile Installation

How A Tile Installation Job Runs, Step By Step

If a past contractor job went sideways, it probably wasn’t the tile that was the problem. It was not knowing what happened next, or finding out about a cost change after the room was already torn apart. Here’s the actual sequence, stage by stage, with realistic timeframes for each one.

Step 1. The call and the site visit

We start with a phone call to understand the scope, then schedule an in-home visit to look at the space, check the subfloor or wall condition, and talk through tile options. Typically scheduled within a few days of the first call. The visit itself runs about 30 to 45 minutes.

Step 2. The written quote

After the visit, you get an itemized written quote, not a verbal number. It breaks out material, labor, and any prep work separately, so you can see exactly what you're paying for. Usually delivered within two to three business days of the visit.

Step 3. Selections and ordering

Once you approve the quote, we confirm tile, grout, and any fixtures, then place the order. Stock tile is often available within a week; special-order tile or natural stone can take two to three weeks to arrive, and we won't set a start date until material is confirmed in hand.

Step 4. Permits

If the job involves new wet-area waterproofing or moving a plumbing fixture, we file for a permit with the Waltham building department before work starts. A straightforward reset within the existing footprint usually doesn't require one. When a permit applies, review typically adds one to two weeks before a start date is set.

Step 5. Demolition and protection

The first day on site is floor protection and containment, then tear-out of the old tile or flooring. We seal off the work area with plastic barriers to keep dust out of the rest of the house. Tear-out and initial subfloor inspection usually take one day for a single room.

Step 6. The build

This is the bulk of the job: backer board or membrane, waterproofing in wet areas, layout, tile setting, and grout. Most single-room jobs run two to four days here, depending on square footage and whether a full waterproofing rebuild is involved.

Step 7. Inspection and punch list

If a permit was pulled, we coordinate the required inspection before anything gets closed up or grouted over. Once work is complete, we walk the space ourselves and note anything that needs a second pass before calling it finished. This typically adds a half day, sometimes done the same day as the final stages of the build.

Step 8. Final walkthrough and warranty

We walk the finished space with you, point out anything you should know about care and cleaning, and go over the workmanship warranty that applies to your job. {WARRANTY_TERMS}. This is also when we confirm grout cure time before the space goes back into full use.

How We Handle Change Orders

If something changes once we’re inside a wall or floor, whether that’s unexpected subfloor damage or a change you want to make partway through, it gets priced in writing before any additional work continues. Nobody is asked to make a decision standing in a demolished room. You’ll have the revised cost and scope in front of you, in writing, with time to think it over before you sign off.

How We Keep Your House Liveable

Dust containment goes up before demolition starts, and floor runners protect the path from the work area to the door for the length of the job. In Waltham specifically, a lot of our jobs are in triple-deckers and multi-unit buildings with shared entries and narrow driveways, so we confirm parking and access during the site visit rather than showing up and figuring it out. If your street requires a resident parking permit or your building has posted quiet hours, tell us during the estimate and we’ll work around it.

Crew typically arrives between 8:00 and 8:30 AM and wraps by 4:30 PM. At the end of each day, tools and materials get staged out of walking paths, the work area gets swept, and nothing gets left in a state that’s unsafe to walk past overnight.

If your home was built before 1978, which is common across Waltham’s older housing stock, renovation work that disturbs paint is also subject to the EPA’s lead-safe work practices, and we follow those procedures on any job where they apply.
