Recent Tile Installation Projects In Waltham
Project one
The Downtown Waltham Kitchen Floor
A 1930s home near downtown Waltham with the original diagonal board subfloor still in place under the kitchen. The existing tile had been cracking along the grout lines for years because it had been set directly over the boards with no decoupling layer. We tore out the old floor, added an uncoupling membrane to isolate the tile from subfloor movement, and set new porcelain tile. About 4 to 6 days start to finish. Rough spend: $6,500.
Project two
The Triple-Decker Shower Rebuild
A unit in a Waltham triple-decker with the building’s original cast iron plumbing behind the bathroom wall. What looked like a routine shower retile turned into a full rebuild once we opened the wall and found a slow leak that had been running behind the old tile for years. We rebuilt the shower pan, waterproofed the surround properly, and reset new tile. A permit was required for the plumbing work involved. About 6 to 8 days including inspection. Rough spend: $11,000.
Project three
The Piety Corner Level-Up
A post-war cape in the Piety Corner area where decades of settling had put the kitchen floor slightly out of level, the kind of thing you don’t notice until you’re trying to lay large-format tile over it. We ground down the high spots, applied a self-leveling compound across the floor, and set large-format porcelain tile that would have telegraphed every dip otherwise. About 4 to 5 days. Rough spend: $8,000.
Project four
The Radiant Floor Bathroom Upgrade
A newer condo conversion in Waltham where the owners wanted to replace dated ceramic tile and add radiant floor heating while they were at it. Because the subfloor was in good shape, this was a more straightforward reset: tear-out, radiant heat mat installed and tested, then new porcelain tile set over it. About 4 to 6 days. Rough spend: $7,500.
